Maybe you don't have a grandmother who will show you how to knit and maybe I'm just more dense than the average person. I just couldn't "get" it from book instructions. It's always helpful to have someone show you how to get started. Most of your local knitting supply shops have classes or open hours where people come and knit and visit and help each other out. If you know where to go in Los Angeles, you may even share the circle with a celebrity knitter.
If you think you're okay with some kind of written instruction, start with that. You will need (of course!) a pair of knitting needles and some yarn.
